  • It's April 22, 2010. I've been coming to this church for the past 1 1/2 years. And I have got to say that it's been a REALLY awesome church.

Now, I'm not a rabid poster who has gone here for decades and wants to just lure people into this church. I've been going to another Chinese church on the Westside for the past 10+ years.

But ever since 1 1/2 years ago, I've been coming here, and it's been an AWESOME church. Note: I can only talk about the English congregation and Sunday School, because I attend them and not the Chinese congregation's options.

    PASTOR:
I came at the beginning of 2009, when Pastor Terrence (Shay) was still pastor. He was an awesome pastor and cared a lot about his small congregation. At the end of 2009, PT went to another church, and starting in April 2010, Pastor Robert Lledo was the new pastor. And I gotta tell you: This guy EXCITES me. He life REALLY changed when he became a Christian, and hearing about his testimony between his "old life" and "new life" really excites me. On top of that, he loves God and loves to faithfully preach His Word and faithfully preach solid doctrine, as well. Since he only started a few weeks ago, I still don't know him entirely that well, but based on his testimony and his sharing, I'm REALLY excited about him.

    WORSHIP TEAM:
Their worship team is really great and upbeat. Guitar, vocalist, drums, keyboards. Even though they all have full-time jobs, they practice hard and play well together.

    CONGREGATION SIZE:
Yes, I'll be upfront and say that the size of the congregation is small. Average attendance is probably in the upper 30s to low 40s. So it's definitely not a large church. In fact, it's probably not even a "medium-sized" church. But the people there are really friendly and warm. They're mostly Chinese nationality (come on...what else did you expect from a church called "CHINESE Baptist Church... ;) ), but they're all ages, from high schoolers to college students to young adults to the elderly. So the ages span all over the place.

It reminds me of a large family: close-knit and intimate. It's definitely somewhere that I'm happy to consider as a "Home away from Home"

  • I started going to this church when I first moved to LA a couple years ago, and I found this church to be one of the warmest churches I've ever been to. There was a negative review about this church in here, and it is quite a false allegation. If you look at the reviewer's other reviews, it is all the same story with different churches which seems suspicious....

  • UPDATE 11/1/15 - Time flies! It's now been a month since I first came to this church. After my previous review, a couple of members of the church reached out to me and invited me back, introducing me to other members of the church and welcoming me to their fellowship (and apologising profusely for my awful first experience! Apparently it's not normally like that).

I've been given to understand the church recently grew from 100 members to almost 300 members and it's grown so much that they've had to split the Chinese services in two. As such, they have experienced growth pains such as newer members serving who don't necessarily know who the new faces within the church may be. Also not all members are as 'welcoming' as you may expect Christians to be (this is likely through no fault of their own, perhaps they are also one of the shy ones).

They've already made a couple of changes in the welcoming and introduction of new friends or visitors to the church so hopefully what happened to me shouldn't reoccur and I've now decided to settle in this church. I remember before leaving my church in London that there are only 3 factors you should look for in a new church and if these are met, then you should stay:

    1. The word of God is faithfully preached.

Pastor Wang does not mince his words and he is not afraid to offend man to teach the word of God. I'm not sure about other small groups, but at least in the one I've joined, Bellman Fellowship, they will bring everything back to Christ. At CBCWLA, this criteria is absolutely met.

    2. The love of Christ is shown.

After re-attending and having now attended for about a month, I can safely say that whilst this is not shown perfectly, they are truly trying their best. Nobody's perfect and you won't always feel God's love through every attendee, but you also shouldn't expect that since every attendee is at a different stage in their walk of faith.

    3. You are able to serve.

You are very welcome to serve! They are not strict, but they do require you to show commitment (and as they should). This is also a great way to love your fellow brothers and sisters and get to know members of the church better, so please do come and make this your church as well.

I'm thankful that God has made something really good come out of this. I was struggling to decide if I should stay at this church, but I remembered the words of my previous pastor and thank God that He brought me here as indeed all 3 key criteria are met. Looks like I will be staying!

I was taught you should always give a church at least 3 tries, if after 3 tries it still doesn't fulfil all 3 factors then move on. I'm very glad I came back as indeed it got much better after the 3rd time.

If you've experienced some of the issues I had below, please come and find me or one of the longstanding members of the church. My name's in the review ;) Or ask for Alight Tsai (M) or I-Shen Lai (F). Please don't just leave without saying hi!

9/27/15 - Just visited this church for the very first time. I didn't actively try to make myself known but I may as well have been invisible. Ignored by everyone and even the ushers/people welcoming at the door didn't say a word to me. It wasn't busy at the time I walked in either.

It's such a shame as the teaching is very solid but, given that the sermon said that loving one another was the sign of having new life in Christ, it's disheartening to feel absolutely no love for shy newcomers who didn't know anyone. At the end of the service, everyone just walked straight passed me, each talking to their own group of friends. I left, the only words exchanged with me in my entire 2hrs there having been me saying "thank you" when the usher wordlessly handed me a pamphlet at the door.

So disappointed and saddened. Today is mid autumn festival, I was really hoping to find a good church family. I rate this church 2 stars as the teaching really is solid.
