  My fiancé and I were completely blown away by the raw talent of the 10:30 Sunday contemporary choir this past Sunday. We are from San Diego and needed a mass. Little did we know what a treat we were in for. Sound system for pastor could be a little better for hearing him, but his message was relevant and mixed with good humor. We will most certainly revisit Saint Marks next time we're up in Venice!

  Great little neighborhood church. Part of the fabric of the community. Family oriented. Inclusive and welcoming.

  It was Halloween night 1977. My cousin and I were dressed in our costumes. We saw the Lennon sisters' house (beautifully done). We visited the convent. The nuns threw candy in the middle of the floor, and we had to run in and retrieve the candy before they untied our shoelaces. Everybody had fun! Then we went to this church. Mean, grouchy, old Father Hobin told us we were not welcome dressed like that (indicating our Halloween costumes). We were turned away. How ironic, turned away, just like Mary and Joseph were turned away from the inns. However, in all honesty, I do believe Father Hobin was ill and in pain.
  OK, then it was time for Catechism classes. We learned very little, because of the predominately Hispanic population, with the language barrier. The classes were slow and dull. In my brother's class, he told me a name of an animal was placed on his back, and he had to guess the name of the animal. When our mother found out about this, she went down to the church to confirm this. Yes, that was what they were doing.
  I disliked Catholicism, I disliked this church with the same homily and speeches every week. I disliked confession. The penance was ALWAYS the same for any sin: 6 Hail Mary's and 6 Our Father's. I think the priests knew we said 2 Hail Mary's and said, "forget this, I have to get home and get dinner started."
  perhaps the church has changed over the decades, but I did not have a good time here.

  St. MARK's is a lovely Catholic Church in Venice California.
